Critical Exponents for Granular Phase Transitions

چکیده

The solid–fluid phase transition of a granular material shaken horizontally is investigated numerically. We find that it is a first-order phase transition and propose two order parameters, namely the averaged kinetic energy and the averaged granular temperature, to determine the fluidization point precisely. It scales as amplitude times square of the frequency of the external vibration. Using this fluidization point as critical point, we show that the kinetic energy and the granular temperature show two different universal critical point exponents for a wide range of excitation amplitudes. Complex critical exponents for percolation transitions in Josephson-junction arrays, antiferromagnets, and interacting bosons.

We show that the critical behavior of the XY quantum-rotor model undergoing a percolation transition is dramatically affected by its topological Berry phase 2π ρ. In particular, for irrational ρ, its low-energy excitations emerge as spinless fermions with fractal spectrum. As a result, critical properties not captured by the usual Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson description of phase transitions arise, s...

Ja n 20 05 Universal scaling behavior of non - equilibrium phase transitions Sven Lübeck

Non-equilibrium critical phenomena have attracted a lot of research interest in the recent decades. Similar to equilibrium critical phenomena, the concept of universality remains the major tool to order the great variety of non-equilibrium phase transitions systematically. All systems belonging to a given universality class share the same set of critical exponents, and certain scaling functions...

Phase transitions in anisotropic superconducting and magnetic systems with vector order parameters: Three-loop renormalization-group analysis.

The critical behavior of the model with N–vector complex order parameter and three quartic coupling constants which describes phase transitions in unconventional superconductors, helical magnets, stacked triangular antiferromagnets, superfluid helium–3 and zero–temperature transitions in fully frustrated Josephson–junction arrays is studied within the field–theoretical renormalization group (RG...

Surface Critical Phenomena at First-order Phase Transitions

Frequently, first-order phase transitions in solids are characterized by the coexistence of a disordered phase and several ordered phases. Near such a transition, the disordered phase may appear in the surface region of the crystal even though the bulk crystal remains in one of its ordered states. This leads to several critical effects which are characterized by critical exponents. Recent exper...

Pair Contact Process with Diffusion: Field Theory

– We elucidate the mechanism underlying the continuous nonequilibrium phase transition of the Pair Contact Process with Diffusion (PCPD). We compute its scaling exponents to second order in an ε-expansion around the upper critical dimension dc = 2 within a simple functional renormalization group (RG) approach. In particular, we establish that the PCPD is not in the directed percolation universa...
